What is BAg-1a?
BAg-1a is a 50 % silver, cadmium-bearing Ag–Cu–Zn–Cd brazing filler (UNS P07500), a higher-silver variant of BAg-1 with a slightly higher melting range and higher joint strength. It is used where BAg-1 flow behaviour is wanted with more silver, and is stocked as wire, plain and flux-coated rod, strip, preforms, powder and paste. As-brazed properties are 415 MPa tensile, 220 MPa yield, 28 % elongation and 95 HB, with service to about 200 °C. Cadmium content and silver cost are the limits; BAg-1 is the cheaper option and BAg-24 or BAg-34 the cadmium-free substitutes. BAg-1a has a density of 9.3 g/cm³ (0.336 lb/in³), lighter than 85% of precious metal grades. It melts at 627°C (1,161 °F). BAg-1a has a yield strength of 220 MPa (31.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 415 MPa (60.2 ksi) — stronger than 67% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 85 GPa (12.3 Msi).
What is BAg-1a used for?
- refrigeration/AC tubing
- electrical/electronic assemblies
- instrument brazing
Advantages
- Low embodied carbon — 65 kg CO₂/kg, better than 78% of precious metal grades
Limitations
- Limited service temperature — 200°C (392 °F), worse than 89% of precious metal grades
- Needs corrosion protection — 60/100, worse than 88% of precious metal grades
- Hard to polish — 70/100, worse than 76% of precious metal grades

Manufacturability5
BAg-1a's machinability is fair (45/100, better than 59% of precious metal grades); formability very good (75/100).

Working with BAg-1a
Is BAg-1a easy to machine?
Rarely machined — soft and gummy; if joint dressing is needed use sharp carbide tools, high speed and light cuts, and capture Cd-bearing swarf as hazardous waste.
Can BAg-1a be welded?
Not a structural weld filler; it is a brazing filler — never fusion-weld it, and never overheat above ~800 °C or Zn/Cd volatilise and the joint becomes porous.
Can BAg-1a be formed, bent or molded?
Readily rolled to strip and drawn to fine wire from cast bar; anneal between reductions and stamp preforms cold.

What surface finishes work on BAg-1a?
Joints wire-brush or hot-water rinse to remove corrosive flux residue; deposits polish and can be nickel/chrome plated, but plate promptly since Zn/Cd surfaces tarnish.
