What is BAg-19?

BAg-19 (UNS P07925) is a very high silver alloy close to the Ag-Cu eutectic, with a lithium addition that gives self-fluxing action by reducing surface oxides. It is used where corrosion resistance, conductivity and FDA-compliant food equipment joints matter, and comes as annealed or hard-drawn wire, strip and foil, and powder-paste. The as-brazed deposit gives roughly 120 MPa yield, 290 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation, 62 HB, 350 W/m·K and 85 % IACS, with service to 400 °C. Brazing at 899–954 °C in vacuum, dry hydrogen or inert gas is required, silver content makes it costly, and it must not be used on high-zinc brasses where lithium causes erosion. BAg-19 has a density of 10.35 g/cm³ (0.374 lb/in³), lighter than 51% of precious metal grades. It melts at 760°C (1,400 °F). BAg-19 has a yield strength of 120 MPa (17.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 290 MPa (42.1 ksi) — weaker than 76% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 78 GPa (11.3 Msi).

What is BAg-19 used for?

  • food and beverage equipment
  • medical device brazing
  • instrumentation requiring high corrosion resistance

Advantages

  • Conducts heat well — 350 W/m·K (202.2 BTU/hr·ft·°F), better than 89% of precious metal grades
  • High electrical conductivity — 85 % IACS, better than 88% of precious metal grades

Limitations

  • Low stiffness — 78 GPa (11.3 Msi), worse than 90% of precious metal grades
  • Low strength — 120 MPa (17.4 ksi), worse than 76% of precious metal grades

Working with BAg-19

Is BAg-19 easy to machine?

Rarely machined; very soft and gummy — use sharp, high-rake tools, high speed and light feeds if trimming preforms.

Can BAg-19 be welded?

Used as a brazing filler, not a weld consumable; braze at 899–954 °C in vacuum, dry hydrogen or inert gas where the Li addition reduces surface oxides.

Can BAg-19 be formed, bent or molded?

Extremely ductile in the annealed state — easily drawn, rolled to foil and stamped into rings/washers; anneal between heavy cold-work passes.
