What is BAg-1?
BAg-1 is a 45 % silver, cadmium-bearing Ag–Cu–Zn–Cd brazing filler (UNS P07450, BAg45CuZnCd) with the lowest melting range of the common BAg alloys. It is chosen for free capillary flow and tolerance of variable joint clearance on steels, stainless, copper alloys and carbide, and is supplied as drawn wire, rolled strip, flux-coated rod, stamped preforms, powder and paste. As-brazed joints give 414 MPa tensile, 200 MPa yield, 21 % elongation, 90 HB and 22 % IACS, with service limited to about 200 °C. Cadmium content bars it from RoHS, food-contact and medical work — substitute BAg-24, BAg-34 or BAg-36. BAg-1 has a density of 9.3 g/cm³ (0.336 lb/in³), lighter than 85% of precious metal grades. It melts at 607°C (1,125 °F). BAg-1 has a yield strength of 200 MPa (29 ksi) and a tensile strength of 414 MPa (60 ksi) — stronger than 51% of precious metal grades. Elongation at break is 21% and the elastic modulus is 83 GPa (12 Msi).
What is BAg-1 used for?
- HVAC/refrigeration copper joints
- carbide tool tip brazing
- electrical contact assembly
- general jobbing brazing
Advantages
- Low embodied carbon — 48 kg CO₂/kg, better than 92% of precious metal grades
Limitations
- Difficult to weld — 15/100, worse than 96% of precious metal grades
- Limited service temperature — 200°C (392 °F), worse than 89% of precious metal grades
- Needs corrosion protection — 65/100, worse than 77% of precious metal grades
- Hard to polish — 70/100, worse than 76% of precious metal grades

Thermal6
BAg-1 is rated for continuous service to 200°C (392 °F). It conducts heat at 100 W/m·K (57.8 BTU/hr·ft·°F), better than 55% of precious metal grades. Thermal expansion is 19 µm/m·K (10.6 µin/in·°F).
Electrical3
BAg-1 conducts electricity at 22 % IACS, better than 61% of precious metal grades.
Chemical & Environmental3
Corrosion resistance is good (65/100), worse than 77% of precious metal grades.
Sustainability4
Producing a kilogram of BAg-1 takes about 700 MJ of energy and emits 48 kg of CO₂ — less than 90% of precious metal grades. Typical recycled content is 40%.
Manufacturability7
BAg-1's machinability is fair (40/100, worse than 60% of precious metal grades); weldability poor (15/100); formability very good (75/100).

Working with BAg-1
Is BAg-1 easy to machine?
Not a structural material — supplied as drawn wire, rolled strip or stamped preforms rather than machined; the alloy is soft and gummy if turned.
Can BAg-1 be welded?
Fusion welding is not applicable; the material is itself the joining filler, applied by torch, induction, resistance or furnace brazing at 620–760 °C with an AWS FB3-A (Type 3A) fluoride-boron flux.
Can BAg-1 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent cold formability in the annealed state — readily drawn, rolled to foil and stamped into rings and washers; anneal between heavy reductions.
BAg-1 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
| Element | Spec limit (wt %) | Nominal |
|---|---|---|
| AgAWS A5.8 / ASTM B260 | 44 – 46 | 45 |
| Cu | 14 – 16 | 15 |
| Znremainder after Ag/Cu/Cd | 14 – 18 | 16 |
| Cdtoxic — fume hazard, RoHS/REACH restricted | 23 – 25 | 24 |
| Other (total)total other elements, max | ≤ 0.15 |
What surface finishes work on BAg-1?
Joints can be polished or plated over; use forced local exhaust because cadmium oxide fume is highly toxic, and avoid the alloy where RoHS/food-contact/medical compliance is required (substitute BAg-24, BAg-34 or BAg-36).

BAg-1 — frequently asked
What is BAg-1 used for?
BAg-1 is typically used for HVAC/refrigeration copper joints, carbide tool tip brazing, electrical contact assembly and general jobbing brazing. In short: lowest-melting common BAg; best gap-filling flow; cadmium-bearing, not RoHS.
