Working with Hastelloy X As Printed

Is Hastelloy X easy to machine?

The alloy work-hardens severely and conducts heat poorly: use rigid clamping, sharp positive-rake carbide or ceramic tooling, low speed with heavy feed, and keep the cutting edge in constant engagement without dwelling. Flood with high-pressure coolant.

Can Hastelloy X be welded?

GTAW, plasma and electron-beam welding all give good results, normally with matching HX wire or Hastelloy W/S filler; no preheat is required. A 1175 °C solution anneal after welding restores ductility where needed.

Can Hastelloy X be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forming and deep drawing are feasible, but springback and work hardening are pronounced — split heavy deformation into passes with intermediate anneals at 1175 °C. Hot form between 950 and 1200 °C.

What surface finishes work on Hastelloy X?

Not anodizable; pickle and passivate, shot blast, electropolish or mechanically polish. Hot-section parts often receive aluminide or thermal-barrier coatings.

Hastelloy X As Printed — frequently asked

What is Hastelloy X As Printed used for?

Hastelloy X As Printed is typically used for gas turbine combustion cans and liners, transition ducts and tailpipes, afterburner and exhaust hardware, 3D-printed hot-section components, industrial furnace muffles and retorts and heat-treat fixtures and baskets. In short: hot-section combustor alloy.

What is the yield strength of Hastelloy X As Printed?

Hastelloy X As Printed has a typical yield strength of 640 MPa (92.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) — stronger than 82% of nickel alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 7 listed tempers.

Is Hastelloy X As Printed easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (15/100, worse than 76% of nickel alloy grades). The alloy work-hardens severely and conducts heat poorly: use rigid clamping, sharp positive-rake carbide or ceramic tooling, low speed with heavy feed, and keep the cutting edge in constant engagement without dwelling. Flood with high-pressure coolant.

Can Hastelloy X As Printed be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (85/100). GTAW, plasma and electron-beam welding all give good results, normally with matching HX wire or Hastelloy W/S filler; no preheat is required. A 1175 °C solution anneal after welding restores ductility where needed.

What surface finishes work on Hastelloy X As Printed?

Not anodizable; pickle and passivate, shot blast, electropolish or mechanically polish. Hot-section parts often receive aluminide or thermal-barrier coatings.

Can Hastelloy X As Printed be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forming and deep drawing are feasible, but springback and work hardening are pronounced — split heavy deformation into passes with intermediate anneals at 1175 °C. Hot form between 950 and 1200 °C.

What is the maximum service temperature of Hastelloy X As Printed?

Hastelloy X As Printed is rated for continuous use to about 700°C (1,292 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between Hastelloy X Solution Annealed and Hastelloy X Aged?

Solution Annealed is the default condition — standard supply and service state for sheet, bar and tube after 1175 °C solution treatment and rapid cooling: highest ductility and uniform structure for forming, welding and long-term service to 1150 °C. Aged: use to assess end-of-life properties after carbide precipitation from 760–870 °C exposure: yield rises to 420 MPa while elongation drops to 22 %; this is not a strengthening heat treatment. Yield strength is 360 MPa in Solution Annealed versus 420 MPa in Aged.
