Working with Hastelloy C-4-SR
Is Hastelloy C-4 easy to machine?
Machines like other C-type Hastelloys: rigid setup, positive-rake carbide, slow speed (~15–25 m/min), heavy constant feed and flood coolant to avoid work-hardened glazing.
Can Hastelloy C-4 be welded?
Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/PAW with matching ERNiCrMo-7 filler, low heat input and no preheat; the Ti stabilization means no post-weld solution anneal is required for corrosion service.
Can Hastelloy C-4 be formed, bent or molded?
Formed cold in the annealed condition but work-hardens rapidly — allow extra power, generous bend radii and intermediate anneals at 1065–1120 °C with rapid quench; hot work 900–1200 °C.
What surface finishes work on Hastelloy C-4?
Not anodizable; grind/pickle to remove weld oxide and embedded iron, then passivate or electropolish for optimum corrosion performance and hygienic finish.

Hastelloy C-4-SR — frequently asked
What is Hastelloy C-4-SR used for?
Hastelloy C-4-SR is typically used for chemical process piping, welded pressure vessels, high-temperature HCl service and pickling equipment. In short: ti-stabilized C-family alloy; stable corrosion after welding; no post-weld anneal required.
What is the yield strength of Hastelloy C-4-SR?
Hastelloy C-4-SR has a typical yield strength of 720 MPa (104 ksi) and a tensile strength of 950 MPa (138 ksi) — stronger than 82% of nickel alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.
Is Hastelloy C-4-SR easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (15/100, worse than 76% of nickel alloy grades). Machines like other C-type Hastelloys: rigid setup, positive-rake carbide, slow speed (~15–25 m/min), heavy constant feed and flood coolant to avoid work-hardened glazing.
Can Hastelloy C-4-SR be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated very good (80/100). Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/PAW with matching ERNiCrMo-7 filler, low heat input and no preheat; the Ti stabilization means no post-weld solution anneal is required for corrosion service.
What surface finishes work on Hastelloy C-4-SR?
Not anodizable; grind/pickle to remove weld oxide and embedded iron, then passivate or electropolish for optimum corrosion performance and hygienic finish.
Can Hastelloy C-4-SR be formed, bent or molded?
Formed cold in the annealed condition but work-hardens rapidly — allow extra power, generous bend radii and intermediate anneals at 1065–1120 °C with rapid quench; hot work 900–1200 °C.
What is the maximum service temperature of Hastelloy C-4-SR?
Hastelloy C-4-SR is rated for continuous use to about 540°C (1,004 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between Hastelloy C-4-SA and Hastelloy C-4-CW?
