Working with Alloy 22-HF
Is Alloy 22 easy to machine?
Treat as a gummy, work-hardening nickel alloy: rigid setups, positive-rake sharp carbide, slow speeds with heavy feed, generous flood coolant and no dwelling to avoid glazing.
Can Alloy 22 be welded?
Very good weldability by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with matching ERNiCrMo-10 filler, low heat input, stringer beads and interpass cooling below ~100 °C; no post-weld heat treatment needed for most service.
Can Alloy 22 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forms well but work-hardens fast — allow ~2× the power of stainless, use intermediate anneals at 1120-1150 °C with rapid quench; hot work 950-1200 °C then solution anneal.
What surface finishes work on Alloy 22?
Pickle or grind off heat tint and oxide before service (heat tint degrades corrosion resistance); electropolishing or mechanical polishing gives high-purity surfaces — anodizing not applicable.

Alloy 22-HF — frequently asked
What is Alloy 22-HF used for?
Alloy 22-HF is typically used for pharmaceutical reactors, flue gas desulfurization, waste treatment and chemical piping. In short: widest-range corrosion nickel; handles oxidizing and reducing acids; very good weldability, poor machinability.
What is the yield strength of Alloy 22-HF?
Alloy 22-HF has a typical yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 790 MPa (115 ksi) — stronger than 56% of nickel alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.
Is Alloy 22-HF easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (16/100, worse than 71% of nickel alloy grades). Treat as a gummy, work-hardening nickel alloy: rigid setups, positive-rake sharp carbide, slow speeds with heavy feed, generous flood coolant and no dwelling to avoid glazing.
Can Alloy 22-HF be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated very good (84/100). Very good weldability by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with matching ERNiCrMo-10 filler, low heat input, stringer beads and interpass cooling below ~100 °C; no post-weld heat treatment needed for most service.

Cold forms well but work-hardens fast — allow ~2× the power of stainless, use intermediate anneals at 1120-1150 °C with rapid quench; hot work 950-1200 °C then solution anneal.
What is the maximum service temperature of Alloy 22-HF?
Alloy 22-HF is rated for continuous use to about 675°C (1,247 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between Alloy 22-ANN and Alloy 22-CD?
