What is 1.2344?
1.2344 (X40CrMoV5-1) is a secondary-hardening hot-work tool steel with about 5% Cr, 1% Mo and 1% V, equivalent to AISI H13, SKD61 and 4Cr5MoSiV1. It combines hot strength, thermal-fatigue (heat-checking) resistance and deep hardenability, air-hardens with low distortion, and is supplied annealed as bar, plate and ESR blocks for die casting dies, hot extrusion tooling, forging dies and plastic moulds, then quenched and tempered to 44–52 HRC. Thermal conductivity is limited and it is not stainless, and toughness falls as hardness rises; continuous service is generally kept below about 540 °C. 1.2344 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), lighter than 87% of steel grades. It melts at 1,427°C (2,601 °F). 1.2344 has a yield strength of 500 MPa (72.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) — stronger than 63% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).
