Working with ER5554-O

Is ER5554 easy to machine?

Weld beads machine like 5454 — gummy and prone to built-up edge; use sharp polished-flute carbide, high speed, low feed and generous lubrication.

Can ER5554 be welded?

Designed as GMAW/GTAW filler for 5454, 5154 and 3004 in service above 65 °C; use argon or Ar-He, clean oxide thoroughly, keep interpass temperature below ~120 °C and avoid dilution with Cu- or Si-bearing alloys.

Can ER5554 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as drawn rod/wire; interanneal between draws to keep ductility and avoid surface tearing that causes feed problems.

What surface finishes work on ER5554?

Anodizes light grey with a good colour match to 5454/5154; not brazeable and not suitable for direct electroplating without zincate pretreatment.

ER5554-O — frequently asked

What is ER5554-O used for?

ER5554-O is typically used for 5454 tank trailers, elevated-temperature aluminum service and chemical process piping. In short: elevated-temperature 5000-series filler; sensitization-resistant Al-Mg; matched filler for 5454.

What is the yield strength of ER5554-O?

ER5554-O has a typical yield strength of 117 MPa (17 ksi) and a tensile strength of 248 MPa (36 ksi) — weaker than 78% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is ER5554-O easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (38/100, worse than 84% of aluminum grades). Weld beads machine like 5454 — gummy and prone to built-up edge; use sharp polished-flute carbide, high speed, low feed and generous lubrication.

Can ER5554-O be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (95/100). Designed as GMAW/GTAW filler for 5454, 5154 and 3004 in service above 65 °C; use argon or Ar-He, clean oxide thoroughly, keep interpass temperature below ~120 °C and avoid dilution with Cu- or Si-bearing alloys.

What surface finishes work on ER5554-O?

Anodizes light grey with a good colour match to 5454/5154; not brazeable and not suitable for direct electroplating without zincate pretreatment.

Can ER5554-O be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as drawn rod/wire; interanneal between draws to keep ductility and avoid surface tearing that causes feed problems.

What is the maximum service temperature of ER5554-O?

ER5554-O is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ER5554-AW and ER5554-H14?

AW is the default condition — default condition: properties of the deposited weld metal made with ER5554 wire, GMAW/GTAW, no post-weld heat treatment. H14: standard hard-drawn condition of layer-wound GMAW spool wire — column strength high enough for push-feeding through long guns. Yield strength is 117 MPa in AW versus 240 MPa in H14.
