What is Ti-6Al-7Nb?
Ti-6Al-7Nb (UNS R56700, ASTM F1295) is an alpha-beta titanium alloy in which niobium replaces the vanadium of Ti-6Al-4V, giving a vanadium-free composition for long-term implant contact. Annealed bar and forgings reach about 900 MPa yield, 1000 MPa tensile, 13% elongation and 32 HRC, and the grade is available as bar, forgings, cold-drawn stock, castings and additively manufactured parts (AM-AB, AM-HIP, CAST-HIP). Cold formability is limited, machinability is low, and service is capped near 350 °C; Ti-6Al-4V ELI is the nearest alternative where vanadium is acceptable. Ti-6Al-7Nb has a density of 4.52 g/cm³ (0.163 lb/in³), heavier than 77% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,600°C (2,912 °F). Ti-6Al-7Nb has a yield strength of 900 MPa (131 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,000 MPa (145 ksi) — stronger than 82% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 13% and the elastic modulus is 105 GPa (15.2 Msi).

Working with Ti-6Al-7Nb
Is Ti-6Al-7Nb easy to machine?
Machine like Ti-6Al-4V: rigid setup, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD tools, low surface speed (25–45 m/min), high feed, flood coolant — poor thermal conductivity causes edge burning and work hardening.
Can Ti-6Al-7Nb be welded?
GTAW, plasma, laser and EBW give sound joints with full argon/vacuum shielding and trailing gas; avoid contamination (O, N, H) which embrittles the weld, and never weld in air or with flux.
Can Ti-6Al-7Nb be formed, bent or molded?
Cold formability is limited (large bend radii, high springback); hot forming/forging at 850–950 °C below the ~1010 °C β-transus is the normal route.
