What is Ti-5Al-2.5Fe?

Ti-5Al-2.5Fe is an alpha-beta titanium alloy developed in Europe as a vanadium-free implant material, using iron rather than vanadium as the beta stabilizer. Annealed stock provides about 870 MPa yield, 950 MPa tensile, 15% elongation and 32 HRC, and it is supplied as bar, hot-worked forgings and cold-drawn/annealed material for hip and dental components. Service temperature is limited to about 300 °C, machinability is low and cold formability is poor; standard coverage and stock are thinner than for Ti-6Al-7Nb, which meets the same vanadium-free requirement. Ti-5Al-2.5Fe has a density of 4.45 g/cm³ (0.161 lb/in³), lighter than 81% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,600°C (2,912 °F). Ti-5Al-2.5Fe has a yield strength of 870 MPa (126 ksi) and a tensile strength of 950 MPa (138 ksi) — stronger than 76% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 15% and the elastic modulus is 110 GPa (16 Msi).

Working with Ti-5Al-2.5Fe

Is Ti-5Al-2.5Fe easy to machine?

Machine like Ti-6Al-4V: rigid setups, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD tools, 25–45 m/min, heavy flood coolant, constant feed to avoid work hardening and titanium fires from fine chips.

Can Ti-5Al-2.5Fe be welded?

GTAW/EBW/laser with full inert (trailing + backing) shielding gives sound joints; keep interpass temperature low and expect some Fe segregation and strength loss in the fusion zone — post-weld stress relief at 550–600 °C recommended.

Can Ti-5Al-2.5Fe be formed, bent or molded?

Cold formability is limited; hot forge/roll in the 850–950 °C α+β range (β transus ≈ 960–980 °C) with controlled cooling to develop a fine bimodal microstructure.
