What is ERTi-23?
ERTi-23 is extra-low-interstitial Ti-6Al-4V ELI filler wire to ASTM B863 (UNS R56407), an alpha-beta alloy with controlled O, N, C and Fe for improved fracture toughness. It is used to weld Grade 23 titanium where fatigue and damage tolerance govern, and is supplied as straightened TIG lengths, spooled wire and cleanroom-packaged medical stock. Deposits typically reach 860 MPa yield, 930 MPa tensile and 12% elongation at 320 HB, with service to about 315 °C. It costs more than standard ERTi-5 and needs strict shielding and cleanliness; where toughness is not critical, ERTi-5 is the direct substitute. ERTi-23 has a density of 4.43 g/cm³ (0.16 lb/in³), lighter than 89% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,604°C (2,919 °F). ERTi-23 has a yield strength of 860 MPa (125 ksi) and a tensile strength of 930 MPa (135 ksi) — stronger than 71% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 114 GPa (16.5 Msi).
What is ERTi-23 used for?
- Medical implant welding
- Aerospace fracture-critical components
- Cryogenic and biomedical titanium structures
Advantages
- Tough — resists crack growth — 80 MPa·√m (72.8 ksi·√in), better than 81% of titanium grades
Limitations
- Poor heat conductor — 6.7 W/m·K (3.87 BTU/hr·ft·°F), worse than 92% of titanium grades
- Low electrical conductivity — 1 % IACS, worse than 89% of titanium grades
- Limited ductility — 12%, worse than 78% of titanium grades

Working with ERTi-23
Is ERTi-23 easy to machine?
Weld deposit machines like Ti-6Al-4V — low speed, high feed, rigid setup, sharp uncoated-carbide or PVD tools and flood coolant to avoid work hardening and chip fires.
Can ERTi-23 be welded?
GTAW/GMAW/PAW/EBW with 99.999 % argon or helium, torch + trailing + backing shield, clean gloves and degreased wire; keep interpass below ~150 °C and reject any weld with straw/blue-to-grey oxide colour.
Can ERTi-23 be formed, bent or molded?
Wire is supplied straightened or spooled; bending the filler is fine, but structural cold forming of the joint should be done before welding or hot at 700–800 °C.
