What is TC11?

TC11 is a high-temperature alpha-beta titanium alloy for rotating aeroengine hardware, supplied annealed (M), duplex annealed, STA, beta annealed or as-forged. It is the strongest grade in this group at about 960 MPa yield, 1080 MPa tensile, 13% elongation and 330 HB (34 HRC), and it retains useful properties to roughly 500 °C, above the Ti-6Al-4V ceiling, which is why it is used for compressor disks and blades. Machinability is very poor (score 15), cold forming is effectively not viable, and supply is limited to forging stock and bar; Ti-6Al-4V is the alternative below 350 °C. TC11 has a density of 4.48 g/cm³ (0.162 lb/in³), lighter than 71% of titanium grades. It melts at 1,600°C (2,912 °F). TC11 has a yield strength of 960 MPa (139 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,080 MPa (157 ksi) — stronger than 90% of titanium grades. Elongation at break is 13% and the elastic modulus is 118 GPa (17.1 Msi).

Working with TC11

Is TC11 easy to machine?

Machinability is poor: use low cutting speed with heavy feed, rigid clamping and sharp carbide or solid tooling with high coolant flow. Avoid tool deflection and the surface damage caused by work hardening and alpha-layer formation.

Can TC11 be welded?

GTAW under vacuum or inert-gas shielding, electron-beam welding and friction welding are all usable, with strict gas protection throughout. Post-weld stress relief at 530–600 °C or a full anneal is needed to restore toughness.

Can TC11 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold formability is very low; almost all parts are isothermally or near-isothermally forged at 900–980 °C, below the beta transus. Control the cooling rate after forging to avoid non-uniform microstructure.

What surface finishes work on TC11?

Pickle in HNO₃/HF to remove scale and alpha case, then shot peen for fatigue strength. Color anodizing or anti-galling treatments can be applied; plating for corrosion protection is generally not needed.

TC11 — frequently asked

What is TC11 used for?

TC11 is typically used for aeroengine compressor disks, compressor blades and high-temperature fasteners. In short: 500 °C alpha-beta titanium; highest strength in family; forging-route alloy.

What is the yield strength of TC11?

TC11 has a typical yield strength of 960 MPa (139 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,080 MPa (157 ksi) — stronger than 90% of titanium grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is TC11 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (15/100, worse than 97% of titanium grades). Machinability is poor: use low cutting speed with heavy feed, rigid clamping and sharp carbide or solid tooling with high coolant flow. Avoid tool deflection and the surface damage caused by work hardening and alpha-layer formation.

Can TC11 be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (45/100). GTAW under vacuum or inert-gas shielding, electron-beam welding and friction welding are all usable, with strict gas protection throughout. Post-weld stress relief at 530–600 °C or a full anneal is needed to restore toughness.

Cold formability is very low; almost all parts are isothermally or near-isothermally forged at 900–980 °C, below the beta transus. Control the cooling rate after forging to avoid non-uniform microstructure.

What is the maximum service temperature of TC11?

TC11 is rated for continuous use to about 500°C (932 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between TC11-M and TC11-STA?

M is the default condition — most common bar and forging supply state, α+β annealed at 950 °C for 1–2 h AC plus 530 °C for 6 h AC, giving the best balance of 960 MPa yield, 13% elongation and structural stability. STA: pick solution treatment near 950 °C with oil or water quench and ageing at 500–530 °C for small and medium sections needing 1060 MPa yield; ductility and fracture toughness fall. Yield strength is 960 MPa in M versus 1,060 MPa in STA.
