Working with DD13-HR

Is DD13 easy to machine?

Very soft and free-cutting but gummy and burr-prone — use sharp, high positive-rake tools, higher cutting speeds and ample coolant; drilling and punching present no difficulty.

Can DD13 be welded?

Carbon equivalent is very low, so resistance spot, MAG, laser and seam welding need no preheat or post-weld heat treatment, and the heat-affected zone does not harden.

Can DD13 be formed, bent or molded?

Deep drawing, flanging and small-radius bending are better than DD11/DD12; killed-steel supply avoids Lüders bands from aging, and skin-passed or pickled sheet is recommended before forming.

What surface finishes work on DD13?

Pickle to remove scale, then phosphate, e-coat, powder coat or hot-dip galvanize; bare material shows rust within days in humid environments.

DD13-HR — frequently asked

What is DD13-HR used for?

DD13-HR is typically used for chassis brackets, wheel rims and structural stampings. In short: most formable hot band; tight bends without cold-rolled cost; aging-resistant killed steel.

What is the yield strength of DD13-HR?

DD13-HR has a typical yield strength of 230 MPa (33.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) — weaker than 97% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is DD13-HR easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (58/100, better than 75% of steel grades). Very soft and free-cutting but gummy and burr-prone — use sharp, high positive-rake tools, higher cutting speeds and ample coolant; drilling and punching present no difficulty.

Can DD13-HR be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (96/100). Carbon equivalent is very low, so resistance spot, MAG, laser and seam welding need no preheat or post-weld heat treatment, and the heat-affected zone does not harden.

What surface finishes work on DD13-HR?

Pickle to remove scale, then phosphate, e-coat, powder coat or hot-dip galvanize; bare material shows rust within days in humid environments.

Can DD13-HR be formed, bent or molded?

Deep drawing, flanging and small-radius bending are better than DD11/DD12; killed-steel supply avoids Lüders bands from aging, and skin-passed or pickled sheet is recommended before forming.

What is the maximum service temperature of DD13-HR?

DD13-HR is rated for continuous use to about 350°C (662 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between DD13-HR and DD13 HR-SP?

HR is the default condition — use this as-rolled hot band with mill scale as the most common stock condition for general formed parts that will be stamped, bent and then painted. HR-SP: pick skin-passed (temper rolled) sheet to suppress the yield plateau and Lüders bands and improve flatness on visible stampings, accepting slightly lower formability. Yield strength is 230 MPa in HR versus 245 MPa in HR-SP.
