What is S32202?

S32202 (1.4062, UR2202) is a molybdenum-free lean duplex stainless steel positioned between 2101 and 2304 in cost and corrosion resistance. Annealed material gives 520 MPa yield, 750 MPa tensile, 35% elongation and about 250 HB (23 HRC), supplied as HRAP plate, annealed sheet and bar, cold-drawn bar and annealed tube. Without molybdenum, chloride pitting resistance is modest (score 60) and it is not a seawater grade; service is limited to about 280 °C and machinability is low (score 35). S32205 is the obvious upgrade where more pitting resistance is required. S32202 has a density of 7.7 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). S32202 has a yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 750 MPa (109 ksi) — stronger than 79% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 35% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with S32202

Is S32202 easy to machine?

Machine like 2205 but with ~20–30% lower cutting speeds than 304: rigid setups, sharp coated carbide, heavy positive feeds to cut under the work-hardened layer, and copious coolant.

Can S32202 be welded?

Weldable by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW/SAW with 2209 or 2307-type filler (autogenous welding only with N₂-bearing shielding plus a re-anneal); keep heat input roughly 0.2–1.5 kJ/mm and interpass below ~150 °C to hold 30–70% ferrite.

Can S32202 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold formable but needs ~2× the press force and larger bend allowances than 304 due to high yield strength and springback; hot form at 950–1150 °C followed by full solution anneal and water quench.

S32202 has a typical yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 750 MPa (109 ksi) — stronger than 79% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is S32202 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated fair (35/100, better than 51% of stainless steel grades). Machine like 2205 but with ~20–30% lower cutting speeds than 304: rigid setups, sharp coated carbide, heavy positive feeds to cut under the work-hardened layer, and copious coolant.

Can S32202 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (70/100).
