What is 1.4410?

EN 1.4410 (UNS S32750, SAF 2507, X2CrNiMoN25-7-4) is a 25Cr-7Ni-4Mo-N super duplex stainless with PREN above 40 and a corrosion score of 88, making it the reference grade for chloride pitting and crevice corrosion service. Solution-annealed plate, sheet, bar, tube and forgings give 600 MPa yield, 850 MPa tensile and 30 % elongation at 270 HB (27 HRC), with cold-worked high-strength bar also on file. Cost, low machinability and strict heat-input control are the trade-offs, and service is capped near 300 °C to avoid sigma-phase and 475 °C embrittlement; 1.4462 (2205) is the step down where PREN 35 suffices. 1.4410 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), heavier than 50% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,350°C (2,462 °F). 1.4410 has a yield strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) and a tensile strength of 850 MPa (123 ksi) — stronger than 86% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4410

Is 1.4410 easy to machine?

Machines like a tough, work-hardening stainless: rigid setup, sharp positive-rake carbide, low speed (~50–70 % of 316L), heavy positive feed to cut under the hardened layer, flood coolant.

Can 1.4410 be welded?

Weldable by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with 25-9-4-N overalloyed filler (e.g. ER2594); keep heat input ~0.5–1.5 kJ/mm, interpass <150 °C, N2-backed root, no preheat and no PWHT — post-weld pickling restores the passive film.

Can 1.4410 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot work 1100–1230 °C followed by full solution anneal at 1040–1120 °C plus rapid water quench; cold forming needs ~2× the force and springback allowance of 316L, and heavily cold formed parts should be re-annealed.

1.4410 — frequently asked

What is 1.4410 used for?

1.4410 is typically used for offshore oil & gas piping, seawater handling systems, desalination plants and chemical tankers. In short: benchmark super duplex grade; PREN above 40; seawater-service stainless.

What is the yield strength of 1.4410?

1.4410 has a typical yield strength of 600 MPa (87 ksi) and a tensile strength of 850 MPa (123 ksi) — stronger than 86% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 4 listed tempers.

Is 1.4410 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (25/100, worse than 88% of stainless steel grades). Machines like a tough, work-hardening stainless: rigid setup, sharp positive-rake carbide, low speed (~50–70 % of 316L), heavy positive feed to cut under the hardened layer, flood coolant.

Can 1.4410 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated good (60/100). Weldable by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with 25-9-4-N overalloyed filler (e.g. ER2594); keep heat input ~0.5–1.5 kJ/mm, interpass <150 °C, N2-backed root, no preheat and no PWHT — post-weld pickling restores the passive film.

What is the maximum service temperature of 1.4410?

1.4410 is rated for continuous use to about 300°C (572 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 1.4410-SA and 1.4410 CW-HS?

SA is the default condition — standard supply condition for plate, sheet, bar, pipe and fittings; best corrosion resistance and toughness. CW-HS: specify when very high yield strength is required in small-section tube or fasteners; toughness and formability drop and ferrite phase is stressed. Yield strength is 600 MPa in SA versus 900 MPa in CW-HS.

How much does 1.4410 cost?
