What is S32950?

UNS S32950 (7-Mo Plus) is a duplex stainless with molybdenum content between 2205 and the super duplex grades, giving 560 MPa yield, 800 MPa tensile, 27 % elongation and about 260 HB (26 HRC) in the annealed condition. It is specified for pressure vessels, tubing, plate and forgings that need more strength and chloride resistance than 2205 without super duplex cost. Like all duplex grades it is limited to roughly 300 °C service, requires controlled heat input with solution annealing after hot work, and is harder to machine than 316L; 2205 is the cheaper alternative and S32750 the step up. S32950 has a density of 7.74 g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³), lighter than 72% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,385°C (2,525 °F). S32950 has a yield strength of 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) — stronger than 85% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 27% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with S32950

Is S32950 easy to machine?

Machines like 2205 but tougher: use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide, 60–100 m/min surface speed, heavy feeds to cut through the work-hardened layer, and copious coolant.

Can S32950 be welded?

Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with over-alloyed 2209/25.10.4L filler, no preheat, low-to-moderate heat input (≈0.5–2.0 kJ/mm), interpass below 150 °C, Ar+N₂ backing; avoid PWHT unless a full solution anneal and quench is possible.

Can S32950 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold form with roughly twice the force of 316L and allow for high springback; hot work 950–1150 °C followed by mandatory solution anneal and rapid quench.

S32950 has a typical yield strength of 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) and a tensile strength of 800 MPa (116 ksi) — stronger than 85% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.

Is S32950 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (30/100, worse than 70% of stainless steel grades). Machines like 2205 but tougher: use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide, 60–100 m/min surface speed, heavy feeds to cut through the work-hardened layer, and copious coolant.

Can S32950 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated very good (70/100). Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with over-alloyed 2209/25.10.4L filler, no preheat, low-to-moderate heat input (≈0.5–2.0 kJ/mm), interpass below 150 °C, Ar+N₂ backing; avoid PWHT unless a full solution anneal and quench is possible.
