What is S32001?
UNS S32001 (19D) is a lean, molybdenum-free duplex stainless that uses manganese and nitrogen in place of nickel and Mo, reaching 520 MPa yield, 690 MPa tensile, 32 % elongation and about 230 HB (98 HRB) annealed. It is chosen as a low-cost alternative to 304/316 where higher strength and better chloride stress-corrosion resistance permit thinner sections; forms include hot-rolled and cold-rolled plate, sheet, 2B coil, cold-drawn bar and welded tube. Pitting resistance is below 2205, service is limited to about 300 °C, and machinability is modest; use 2205 for more aggressive chloride service. S32001 has a density of 7.74 g/cm³ (0.28 lb/in³), lighter than 72% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). S32001 has a yield strength of 520 MPa (75.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 690 MPa (100 ksi) — stronger than 79% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 32% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with S32001
Is S32001 easy to machine?
Machine like 2205 but slightly easier: rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, low speed / heavy positive feed to cut under the work-hardened skin, ample flood coolant.
Can S32001 be welded?
GTAW/GMAW/SAW with over-alloyed 2209 (or matching 2101/2307) filler and N-bearing shielding; keep heat input roughly 0.5–2.5 kJ/mm and interpass <150 °C, no PWHT — autogenous welds should be re-annealed or filler-added to keep austenite content.
Can S32001 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold formable but needs ~2× the press force and larger over-bend allowance than 304 because of high yield and springback; hot work 1100–1200 °C and always solution anneal + water quench afterwards.

What surface finishes work on S32001?
Pickle/passivate (HNO₃-HF) or bead-blast plus passivation after welding to remove heat tint; electropolishing and mechanical polishing give good bright finishes — do not anodize.

S32001 — frequently asked
What is S32001 used for?
S32001 is typically used for structural tanks, transportation trailers and general industrial fabrication. In short: lowest-cost duplex stainless; molybdenum-free 304 replacement; roughly double 304 yield.
