What is 1.4655?

EN 1.4655 (X2CrNiCuN23-4) is a copper-modified lean duplex stainless with roughly 23% Cr and 4% Ni plus nitrogen, offering better machinability than standard duplex grades and general corrosion resistance in the 2304 class. Engineers use it for moderate-strength corrosion service at 480 MPa yield, 700 MPa tensile, 28% elongation and about 230 HB, in cold- and hot-rolled sheet (2B, 1D, 1E), 2R bright strip, solution-annealed bar and cold-drawn or cold-worked strip. Service is capped near 280 °C, and with no molybdenum its chloride pitting resistance is limited (corrosion score 58) — step up to 1.4462 (2205) for seawater or high-chloride duty. 1.4655 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), heavier than 50% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 1.4655 has a yield strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 700 MPa (102 ksi) — stronger than 75% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 28% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4655

Is 1.4655 easy to machine?

Machine like 2205 but slightly easier thanks to copper: rigid setup, sharp coated carbide, low speed / high positive feed, generous coolant, avoid dwell to prevent work hardening.

Can 1.4655 be welded?

Weld with 22-9-3-L / 2209-type filler or matching consumables, low-to-moderate heat input, interpass below ~150 °C, no preheat, argon+2%N shielding helps restore austenite balance.

Can 1.4655 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold form with ~2× the press force and larger bend radii than 304 because of high yield and springback; hot form 1000–1150 °C followed by full solution anneal and water quench.
