What is S32205?
S32205 (1.4462, X2CrNiMoN22-5-3, 2205) is the workhorse 22Cr-5Ni-3Mo-N duplex stainless steel, with a balanced ferrite-austenite structure, nitrogen alloying and broad ASTM/EN coverage. It gives austenitic-level corrosion resistance with roughly double the yield strength — 550 MPa yield, 790 MPa tensile, 30% elongation and about 260 HB (25 HRC) — in solution-annealed plate, HRAP and 2B sheet, hot-finished and cold-drawn bar, forgings, and seamless or welded pipe. Service is limited to about 300 °C by sigma-phase and 475 °C embrittlement, and machining is slower than 316L. For higher chloride pitting resistance, step up to S32750. S32205 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), heavier than 50% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). S32205 has a yield strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 790 MPa (115 ksi) — stronger than 83% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with S32205
Is S32205 easy to machine?
Cuts like a work-hardening, high-strength stainless: use rigid setups, ~60–70% of 316L speeds, heavy positive feed to stay under the hardened skin, sharp coated carbide and copious coolant.
Can S32205 be welded?
Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with over-alloyed 2209/E2209 filler; keep heat input roughly 0.5–2.5 kJ/mm and interpass below 150 °C, avoid autogenous welds without post-weld anneal to preserve 50/50 ferrite-austenite.
Can S32205 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold forming needs roughly twice the force of 304 with large springback allowance; hot form at 1000–1200 °C followed by full solution anneal and quench — never finish between 300 and 950 °C.
