What is 1.4062?

EN 1.4062 (X2CrNiN22-2) is a molybdenum-free lean duplex stainless that reaches 550 MPa yield and 750 MPa tensile with 35 % elongation through its ferrite/austenite structure and nitrogen alloying rather than high nickel content. Engineers specify it as a lower-cost, higher-strength substitute for 304 and 316 in structural and containment work, supplied as 2B cold-rolled sheet, 1D hot-rolled plate, solution-annealed and cold-drawn bar, and welded tube. Without molybdenum, chloride pitting resistance (score 63) sits below 2205 and service is limited to about 250 °C; step up to 1.4362 or 1.4462 for harder chloride exposure. 1.4062 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), heavier than 50% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 1.4062 has a yield strength of 550 MPa (79.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 750 MPa (109 ksi) — stronger than 83% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 35% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with 1.4062

Is 1.4062 easy to machine?

Machines like 2205 but slightly easier: use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, ~25–35% lower cutting speed than 304, heavy feed to cut under the work-hardened layer, and copious coolant.

Can 1.4062 be welded?

Readily welded by GTAW/GMAW/SAW with 2209 or matching lean-duplex filler and Ar+~2%N2 backing; keep heat input ~0.5–2.5 kJ/mm and interpass below ~150 °C to hold the ferrite/austenite balance; no PWHT required.

Can 1.4062 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forms well but needs roughly twice the press force of 304 and generous overbend for springback; hot form at 950–1200 °C followed by full solution anneal at 950–1050 °C with rapid water quench.
