What is S32520?

S32520 (UR52N+) is a 25Cr super duplex stainless steel with nitrogen and a copper addition, supplied solution annealed as plate, bar, forgings and seamless or welded pipe (also hot- and cold-rolled and cold-drawn conditions). Engineers select it for 620 MPa yield, 850 MPa tensile and 30% elongation at 260 HB (26 HRC) together with resistance to sulfuric acid and chloride environments comparable to 2507. Service is capped near 300 °C because of sigma-phase and 475 °C embrittlement, heat input during welding must be controlled, and machinability is low. S32750/2507 is the nearest alternative when the copper addition is not required. S32520 has a density of 7.8 g/cm³ (0.282 lb/in³), heavier than 50% of stainless steel grades. It melts at 1,385°C (2,525 °F). S32520 has a yield strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 850 MPa (123 ksi) — stronger than 88% of stainless steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with S32520

Is S32520 easy to machine?

Machine like 2507: rigid setups, 20–30 % lower speeds than 316, positive-rake coated carbide, heavy constant feed and flood coolant to avoid work-hardened skins and dwell.

Can S32520 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/SMAW with over-alloyed 25.10.4.L (Cu-bearing) filler, Ar+2 %N2 backing, interpass ≤150 °C and 0.5–2.5 kJ/mm heat input; no preheat, no PWHT unless a full solution anneal + quench is possible.

Can S32520 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold forms with roughly twice the force and springback of austenitics — use generous radii and over-bend; hot work 1000–1150 °C followed by mandatory solution anneal and water quench.

What surface finishes work on S32520?

Pickle and passivate (or electropolish) after welding to remove heat tint; grinding must not smear the surface — bead-blast plus pickling paste gives the most reliable corrosion performance. Not anodizable.
