Working with 2A14-O
Is 2A14 easy to machine?
Machines well in T4/T6 with sharp carbide tooling, high speed and flood coolant; long chips in O temper, so age-harden before finish machining for best surface.
Can 2A14 be welded?
Fusion welding is not recommended (hot cracking, big HAZ strength loss); join by riveting, bolting or friction stir welding, and re-heat-treat plus age if arc welding is unavoidable.
Can 2A14 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent hot workability at 420–470 °C for die forging and extrusion; cold form only in O or freshly quenched W/T4 condition, T6 parts should not be bent.
What surface finishes work on 2A14?
Use chromic or hard anodizing plus primer/topcoat, or Alclad/cladding, for corrosion protection; decorative bright anodizing gives a dull yellow tint because of the 4 % Cu.

2A14-O — frequently asked
What is 2A14-O used for?
2A14-O is typically used for forged aircraft fittings, structural airframe forgings, extruded profiles and stringers, highly stressed machined brackets, die-forged levers and links and high-strength bolt and stud blanks. In short: forging-grade 2000-series alloy; highest strength in group; 2014-equivalent forgings.
What is the yield strength of 2A14-O?
2A14-O has a typical yield strength of 95 MPa (13.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 185 MPa (26.8 ksi) — weaker than 86% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.
Is 2A14-O easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated fair (40/100, worse than 81% of aluminum grades). Machines well in T4/T6 with sharp carbide tooling, high speed and flood coolant; long chips in O temper, so age-harden before finish machining for best surface.
Can 2A14-O be welded?
Not readily — weldability is rated poor (25/100). Fusion welding is not recommended (hot cracking, big HAZ strength loss); join by riveting, bolting or friction stir welding, and re-heat-treat plus age if arc welding is unavoidable.
What surface finishes work on 2A14-O?
Use chromic or hard anodizing plus primer/topcoat, or Alclad/cladding, for corrosion protection; decorative bright anodizing gives a dull yellow tint because of the 4 % Cu.
Can 2A14-O be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent hot workability at 420–470 °C for die forging and extrusion; cold form only in O or freshly quenched W/T4 condition, T6 parts should not be bent.
What is the maximum service temperature of 2A14-O?
2A14-O is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between 2A14-T6 and 2A14-O?
