Compare all 8 conditionsHide
| Condition · open for datasheet | Best for | Yield MPa | Tensile MPa | Elong. % | Hardness | Conductivity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Annealed | Softest condition, chosen for severe bending/forming or deep drawing before a later solution treatment and age. | 85 | 195 | 20 | 45 HB | 45 % IACS |
As-welded HAZ (naturally re-aged 30 days) | Design condition for welded 7005 structures — HAZ recovers a large part of parent strength by natural aging without post-weld heat treatment. | 205 | 290 | 10 | 78 HB | 42 % IACS |
Solution heat treated and overaged for stress-corrosion resistance | Over-aged variant traded ~10–15 % strength for markedly better stress-corrosion and exfoliation resistance in marine/humid service. | 255 | 310 | 14 | 85 HB | 44 % IACS |
Cooled from hot working and artificially aged | Press-quenched and aged: cheapest route to near-T6 strength in thin-wall 7005 extrusions with less distortion. | 285 | 330 | 12 | 90 HB | 40 % IACS |
Solution heat treated and artificially aged | Standard stocked condition: full precipitation strength for welded frames, structural extrusions and machined brackets. | 295 | 350 | 12 | 94 HB | 40 % IACS |
Solution treated, stress-relieved by stretching, aged | Stretch-relieved extruded profiles for machined parts where residual-stress distortion must be minimized. | 300 | 350 | 11 | 95 HB | 40 % IACS |
T6, stress relieved by stretching, minor straightening | Same as T6510 but with allowance for minor straightening — usual condition for long precision bar and profile stock. | 300 | 350 | 11 | 95 HB | 40 % IACS |
Press quenched, over-aged/stabilized | Proprietary two-step age used on welded bicycle and sports frames — highest 7005 strength with improved SCC stability after welding. | 345 | 393 | 15 | 105 HB | 41 % IACS |
What is 7005?
7005 is a medium-strength, copper-free Al-Zn-Mg (7000 series) extrusion alloy, heat-treatable and grain-refined with Zr and Mn, whose heat-affected zone re-ages at room temperature or by artificial aging to recover joint strength. It is chosen for welded structures that need more strength than 6061 — roughly 40 % higher — at lower cost and better weldability than 7075, and is supplied mainly as extruded tube and profile in T5, T53, T6, T6510/T6511 and T73. Formability and corrosion resistance are only fair. The weld HAZ and the short-transverse direction are sensitive to stress-corrosion cracking, so correct aging (T5/T53/T6) is required and long-term hot service should be avoided. 7005 has a density of 2.78 g/cm³ (0.1 lb/in³), heavier than 74% of aluminum grades. It melts at 607°C (1,125 °F). 7005 has a yield strength of 295 MPa (42.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 350 MPa (50.8 ksi) — stronger than 75% of aluminum grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 72 GPa (10.4 Msi).

Limitations
- Limited service temperature — 120°C (248 °F), worse than 79% of aluminum grades

Working with 7005
Is 7005 easy to machine?
Machines well in T5/T6 with sharp polished-flute carbide, high speed and generous coolant; chips are short compared with O temper but material gums if tools dull.
Can 7005 be welded?
Best-weldable 7000 series: GMAW/GTAW with 5356 or 5183 filler, no preheat, HAZ naturally re-ages to ~80 % of parent strength in ~30 days (faster with a 120 °C/24 h post-weld age).
Can 7005 be formed, bent or molded?
Extrudes readily to thin-wall bicycle profiles; cold bending should be done in O or T4-like condition with generous radii, since T6 tube cracks at tight bends.
Manufacturability
The process limits FabDigit applies to 7005. Every 7005 part is priced by an engineer; design inside these and the quote comes back without a redesign loop.
