What is PMMA?

PMMA is a rigid, amorphous acrylic thermoplastic prized for the best optical clarity and outdoor weather resistance of the commodity transparent plastics (~92 % light transmission, n≈1.49), with good surface hardness, dimensional stability and easy polishing/solvent bonding. Cast sheet has higher molecular weight (better machining, chemical and thermal performance) while extruded sheet and injection grades trade some properties for lower cost and formability. Main limits are brittleness (notched Izod ≈20 J/m), stress-crazing in ketones, esters, chlorinated and aromatic solvents or alcohols, and a service ceiling near 70–80 °C. PMMA has a density of 1.19 g/cm³ (0.043 lb/in³), heavier than 53% of polymer grades. Its glass-transition temperature is 105°C (221 °F). PMMA has a yield strength of 68 MPa (9.86 ksi) and a tensile strength of 70 MPa (10.2 ksi) — stronger than 77% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 4.5% and the elastic modulus is 3.2 GPa (0.464 Msi).

Working with PMMA

Is PMMA easy to machine?

Machines cleanly with sharp, polished, high-rake carbide tools and high spindle speed / low feed; use 0° rake or step drills to avoid chipping, and anneal (80 °C, 1 h per 3 mm) before and after cutting to prevent crazing.

Can PMMA be welded?

Not conventionally weldable — join with methylene-chloride or MMA cement (solvent/polymerisable), UV-cure acrylic adhesive, or ultrasonic welding for molded parts; hot-gas/hot-plate welding is possible but leaves visible seams.

Can PMMA be formed, bent or molded?

Thermoform at 150–175 °C from dried sheet; injection mold at 220–265 °C melt / 50–90 °C mold after drying 3–4 h at 80 °C, and hold back pressure to avoid silver streaking.

What surface finishes work on PMMA?

Flame, diamond or buff polish gives optical edges; hard-coat lacquers improve scratch and chemical resistance; paints and inks must be acrylic/urethane-based — solvent-rich systems craze the surface.

PMMA — frequently asked

What is PMMA used for?

PMMA is typically used for automotive taillight lenses, illuminated signage and lettering, machine guards and viewing windows, light pipes and optical lenses, display cases and retail fixtures and skylights and architectural glazing. In short: crystal clear; weatherproof.

What is the yield strength of PMMA?

PMMA has a typical yield strength of 68 MPa (9.86 ksi) and a tensile strength of 70 MPa (10.2 ksi) — stronger than 77% of polymer grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 8 listed tempers.

Is PMMA easy to machine?

Yes — machinability is rated very good (70/100, better than 74% of polymer grades). Machines cleanly with sharp, polished, high-rake carbide tools and high spindle speed / low feed; use 0° rake or step drills to avoid chipping, and anneal (80 °C, 1 h per 3 mm) before and after cutting to prevent crazing.

What is the maximum service temperature of PMMA?

PMMA is rated for continuous use to about 70°C (158 °F), and briefly to 95°C. Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between PMMA Extruded and PMMA FR?

Extruded is the default condition — lowest-cost transparent acrylic sheet with tight thickness tolerance; best for thermoforming, laser cutting and signage. FR: for lighting diffusers, transit glazing and electrical enclosures needing UL 94 V-0 or low smoke; expect some loss of clarity and toughness. Yield strength is 68 MPa in Extruded versus 56 MPa in FR.
