What is ALM PA 640-GSL?

ALM PA 640-GSL is ALM's PA12 (GB+CF-filled) powder for Selective Laser Sintering on EOS FORMIGA P 110 / P 396 / P 500 / P 770. ALM PA 640-GSL has a tensile strength of 49 MPa (7.11 ksi), stronger than 53% of polymer grades. Elongation at break is 3% and the elastic modulus is 3.816 GPa (0.553 Msi). ALM PA 640-GSL has a density of 0.82 g/cm³ (0.0296 lb/in³), lighter than 83% of polymer grades.

Advantages

  • Stiff — 3.816 GPa (0.553 Msi), better than 86% of polymer grades
  • Lightweight — 0.82 g/cm³ (0.0296 lb/in³), better than 83% of polymer grades

Limitations

  • Limited ductility — 3%, worse than 83% of polymer grades

Choosing PA 640-GSL

A lightweight ALM/EOS PA12 filled with hollow glass spheres and carbon fibre for stiff, dimensionally stable SLS parts on the EOS P396.

Consider it for
Lightweight rigid housings · Dimensionally stable fixtures · High-detail, low-strain components exposed to heat
Tradeoffs
The hybrid filler raises stiffness while leaving very low elongation. It remains a filled nylon, not a metal or continuous-fibre laminate, and the EOS store lists only the P396 as suitable.
Design and validation
Avoid snaps and sharp notches, keep the process on the documented P396 route, and validate the actual load direction. Check that the unusually low density and filler description remain current at purchase.
Finishing
Dark gray is the as-printed surface and the row is not dyeable. Blasting or coating should be sampled because exposed filler and surface texture can affect appearance and adhesion.
Before choosing
Is a lightweight stiff filled nylon preferable to PA12-GF or an unfilled ductile grade? Is the EOS P396 process route available and acceptable for qualification?
