Working with ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SR

Is ERNiCrMo-2 easy to machine?

Weld deposits and the alloy generally machine like a tough austenitic superalloy: rigid setups, positive-rake carbide or ceramic tooling, low surface speed, heavy flood coolant and no dwelling to avoid work hardening.

Can ERNiCrMo-2 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW/PAW and laser hot-wire on Hastelloy X, 617, 625 and dissimilar Ni/stainless joints; keep interpass temperature low, use stringer beads and low heat input, argon or Ar-He shielding with full back purge to avoid microfissuring.

Can ERNiCrMo-2 be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as cold-drawn wire; the deposited metal is highly ductile in solution-annealed condition but work-hardens quickly, so plan intermediate anneals for any cold forming of welded assemblies.

What surface finishes work on ERNiCrMo-2?

Pickle or blast to remove chromium-rich weld oxide before service or coating; not anodisable, but takes electropolishing, aluminide/diffusion coatings and thermal-barrier bond coats well.

ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SR — frequently asked

What is ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SR used for?

ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SR is typically used for gas turbine combustor liners, aerospace furnace fixtures and high-temperature sheet metal fabrication. In short: matches Hastelloy X; rated to 1150 °C; oxidation-resistant weld metal.

What is the yield strength of ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SR?

ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SR has a typical yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 745 MPa (108 ksi) — stronger than 56% of nickel alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SR easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (24/100, better than 71% of nickel alloy grades). Weld deposits and the alloy generally machine like a tough austenitic superalloy: rigid setups, positive-rake carbide or ceramic tooling, low surface speed, heavy flood coolant and no dwelling to avoid work hardening.

Can ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SR be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (88/100).

What surface finishes work on ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SR?

Pickle or blast to remove chromium-rich weld oxide before service or coating; not anodisable, but takes electropolishing, aluminide/diffusion coatings and thermal-barrier bond coats well.

Can ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SR be formed, bent or molded?

Supplied as cold-drawn wire; the deposited metal is highly ductile in solution-annealed condition but work-hardens quickly, so plan intermediate anneals for any cold forming of welded assemblies.

What is the maximum service temperature of ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SR?

ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SR is rated for continuous use to about 1,150°C (2,102 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between ERNiCrMo-2-AW and ERNiCrMo-2 AW-SA?

AW is the default condition — default condition for qualification and most aerospace/turbine joints where no post-weld heat treatment is applied. AW-SA: best choice for maximum ductility and homogeneous, carbide-free weld structure before long-term high-temperature service or subsequent forming. Yield strength is 430 MPa in AW versus 360 MPa in AW-SA.
