What is C64200?

C64200 is an aluminium-silicon bronze with about 7% Al and 2% Si; the silicon refines the structure and markedly improves machinability and hot working while retaining aluminium-bronze strength (690 MPa tensile, 370 MPa yield) and resistance to seawater and other corrosive media. It is normally supplied as extruded and drawn bar (HR50, H04) for valve stems, fasteners, nuts, bushings, flange faces and marine hardware. Cold formability is only fair, the tenacious alumina film makes brazing and soldering difficult, and conductivity of about 7% IACS rules out electrical duty; C63000 is the choice when higher strength is needed. C64200 has a density of 7.69 g/cm³ (0.278 lb/in³), lighter than 90% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,027°C (1,881 °F). C64200 has a yield strength of 370 MPa (53.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 690 MPa (100 ksi) — stronger than 75% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 32% and the elastic modulus is 117 GPa (17 Msi).

Working with C64200

Is C64200 easy to machine?

Best of the aluminium bronzes to machine (≈60 % of C36000): use sharp carbide, positive rake, high feed with light depth to break the tough chip, and flood coolant.

Can C64200 be welded?

Good with GTAW/GMAW using ECuAl-A2 or matching Cu-Al-Si filler, argon shield, preheat 100–150 °C on heavy sections; keep interpass low and avoid oxyfuel because of the refractory oxide.

Can C64200 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot works readily at 750–870 °C (forge, extrude, upset); cold formability is only fair — bend generously in O60 and interanneal between heavy draws.
