What is C62200?

C62200 is a wrought aluminum bronze rod and bar alloy covered by ASTM B150, used where higher strength than C61400 is needed. It delivers 655 MPa tensile strength, 330 MPa yield, 20 % elongation and 170 HB (90 HRB), with service to about 300 °C and good resistance to seawater, wear and galling in bearing and gear applications. Limits are a machinability rating of roughly 30 on the free-cutting brass scale, poor cold formability, and the need to hot work at 700–850 °C. Nickel-aluminum bronzes are the alternative when still higher strength is required. C62200 has a density of 7.53 g/cm³ (0.272 lb/in³), lighter than 96% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,027°C (1,881 °F). C62200 has a yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 655 MPa (95 ksi) — stronger than 69% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 117 GPa (17 Msi).

Working with C62200

Is C62200 easy to machine?

Machines like a tough, gummy-to-abrasive bronze: rigid setup, positive-rake sharp carbide, moderate speed with heavy feed and flood coolant; expect ~20–30 % of free-cutting brass throughput and short tool life on the hard γ2-containing tempers.

Can C62200 be welded?

GTAW/GMAW with matching aluminium-bronze filler (ERCuAl-A2) works well if the alumina film is wire-brushed off and interpass temperature is kept low; avoid slow cooling through 550–350 °C and do not oxyacetylene weld or solder.

Can C62200 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot work at 700–850 °C (forge, extrude, bend); cold formability is poor, so limit cold bends to generous radii or anneal first, and use a 600–650 °C temper anneal to relieve stresses.

What surface finishes work on C62200?

Not anodizable — takes a fine mechanical polish and buffs to a golden lustre that self-passivates; electroplating (Ni strike first) or PTFE/dry-film lubricant coatings are used for wear parts, and no painting is normally needed for marine service.

C62200 — frequently asked

What is C62200 used for?

C62200 is typically used for gears, bushings, marine hardware and pump shafts. In short: stronger than C61400; wear-resistant marine bronze; hot-forged bar and rod.

What is the yield strength of C62200?

C62200 has a typical yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 655 MPa (95 ksi) — stronger than 69% of copper alloy grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.

Is C62200 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (30/100, worse than 67% of copper alloy grades).

Yes — weldability is rated good (65/100). GTAW/GMAW with matching aluminium-bronze filler (ERCuAl-A2) works well if the alumina film is wire-brushed off and interpass temperature is kept low; avoid slow cooling through 550–350 °C and do not oxyacetylene weld or solder.
