What is ZCuAl10Fe3?

ZCuAl10Fe3 (C95200) is an iron-bearing cast aluminium bronze, nominally 10 % Al with 3 % Fe, in which the iron refines the grain and forms hard kappa particles that raise wear resistance. It is a widely used casting grade offering 200 MPa yield, 540 MPa tensile, 20 % elongation and 120 HB (70 HRB) with useful strength to about 300 °C and good seawater corrosion resistance, available as sand, chill, centrifugal and continuous castings. Machinability is moderate (score 45) and the abrasive Fe/kappa particles wear tooling. For higher strength choose ZCuAl10Fe3Mn2, or ZCuAl8Mn13Fe3Ni2 for heavily loaded marine work. ZCuAl10Fe3 has a density of 7.5 g/cm³ (0.271 lb/in³), lighter than 98% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,045°C (1,913 °F). ZCuAl10Fe3 has a yield strength of 200 MPa (29 ksi) and a tensile strength of 540 MPa (78.3 ksi) — weaker than 54% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 110 GPa (16 Msi).

Working with ZCuAl10Fe3

Is ZCuAl10Fe3 easy to machine?

Machines like a tough bronze — rigid setup, sharp positive-rake carbide, moderate speed with generous coolant; hard κ/Fe particles cause abrasive tool wear and long stringy chips.

Can ZCuAl10Fe3 be welded?

Weldable by GTAW/GMAW with matching Cu-Al filler (e.g. ERCuAl-A2), 150–250 °C preheat, argon shielding and thorough oxide removal; avoid overheating to limit brittle γ2 phase.

Can ZCuAl10Fe3 be formed, bent or molded?

A casting alloy only — pour at 1150–1200 °C with quiet bottom gating, generous risers and degassing; the alumina film makes turbulence-free filling essential.

What surface finishes work on ZCuAl10Fe3?

Polishes to a golden lustre and can be shot-blasted or passivated; electroplating and soldering require aggressive oxide removal or a nickel strike.
