Working with 5070-H34

Is 5070 easy to machine?

Machines like other Al-Mg alloys: use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high speed and generous coolant to avoid built-up edge and stringy chips; harder H3x tempers cut cleaner than O.

Can 5070 be welded?

Excellent GMAW/GTAW and FSW weldability with 5183/5356 filler; HAZ softens back toward the annealed strength, so design joints on O/H111 properties.

Can 5070 be formed, bent or molded?

Form in O/H111 for tight bends; watch for Lüders (stretcher-strain) marks on annealed sheet and increase bend radii sharply in H34–H38.

What surface finishes work on 5070?

Takes good clear or hard sulfuric anodizing and marine paint systems; mechanically polished surfaces stay slightly satin, and etch/anodize contrast can vary with Mn-Fe intermetallics.

5070-H34 — frequently asked

What is 5070-H34 used for?

5070-H34 is typically used for marine structural sheet, welded hull and superstructure plate, boat deck and bulkhead panels, storage tank shells, truck and trailer body panels and welded structural fabrications. In short: zn-modified 5000-series sheet; higher strength than 5754; marine welded fabrication.

What is the yield strength of 5070-H34?

5070-H34 has a typical yield strength of 260 MPa (37.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 340 MPa (49.3 ksi) — stronger than 68% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 11 listed tempers.

Is 5070-H34 easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated good (55/100, worse than 59% of aluminum grades). Machines like other Al-Mg alloys: use sharp polished high-rake carbide, high speed and generous coolant to avoid built-up edge and stringy chips; harder H3x tempers cut cleaner than O.

Can 5070-H34 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated excellent (85/100). Excellent GMAW/GTAW and FSW weldability with 5183/5356 filler; HAZ softens back toward the annealed strength, so design joints on O/H111 properties.

What surface finishes work on 5070-H34?

Takes good clear or hard sulfuric anodizing and marine paint systems; mechanically polished surfaces stay slightly satin, and etch/anodize contrast can vary with Mn-Fe intermetallics.

Can 5070-H34 be formed, bent or molded?

Form in O/H111 for tight bends; watch for Lüders (stretcher-strain) marks on annealed sheet and increase bend radii sharply in H34–H38.

What is the maximum service temperature of 5070-H34?

5070-H34 is rated for continuous use to about 65°C (149 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between 5070-H111 and 5070-H38?

H111 is the default condition — standard stocked plate/sheet condition: near-annealed formability with slightly higher proof strength from straightening/levelling. H38: maximum strain-hardened strength for flat parts with minimal forming; lowest ductility. Yield strength is 150 MPa in H111 versus 315 MPa in H38.
