Working with 2A80-F
Is 2A80 easy to machine?
Machinability in T6 is good, but the Fe/Ni/Si hard phases abrade tooling; use diamond or fine-grain carbide inserts, high spindle speeds, large rake angles and ample coolant.
Can 2A80 be welded?
Fusion weldability is poor, with hot cracking and a large drop in joint strength. Use bolted or riveted joints, friction welding or diffusion bonding, and re-solution treat and age after any welding.
Can 2A80 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forging and die forging at about 420–470 °C work well. T6 is essentially not cold formable, so complete any bending in the O temper and heat treat afterwards.
What surface finishes work on 2A80?
Hard anodizing raises wear resistance on piston ring grooves and skirts. Decorative anodizing comes out dark; for outdoor or humid service use chromate conversion coating plus paint, or alclad protection.

2A80-F — frequently asked
What is 2A80-F used for?
2A80-F is typically used for forged engine pistons, compressor rotors and impellers, compressor housings, high-temperature engine forgings, turbocharger-adjacent brackets and machined hot-section fittings. In short: 2618A performance class; load-bearing to 200 °C; forge-and-machine only.
What is the yield strength of 2A80-F?
2A80-F has a typical yield strength of 155 MPa (22.5 ksi) and a tensile strength of 275 MPa (39.9 ksi) — weaker than 63% of aluminum grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 5 listed tempers.
Is 2A80-F easy to machine?
Reasonably — machinability is rated good (55/100, worse than 59% of aluminum grades). Machinability in T6 is good, but the Fe/Ni/Si hard phases abrade tooling; use diamond or fine-grain carbide inserts, high spindle speeds, large rake angles and ample coolant.
Can 2A80-F be welded?
Not readily — weldability is rated poor (25/100). Fusion weldability is poor, with hot cracking and a large drop in joint strength. Use bolted or riveted joints, friction welding or diffusion bonding, and re-solution treat and age after any welding.
What surface finishes work on 2A80-F?
Hard anodizing raises wear resistance on piston ring grooves and skirts. Decorative anodizing comes out dark; for outdoor or humid service use chromate conversion coating plus paint, or alclad protection.
Can 2A80-F be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forging and die forging at about 420–470 °C work well. T6 is essentially not cold formable, so complete any bending in the O temper and heat treat afterwards.
What is the maximum service temperature of 2A80-F?
2A80-F is rated for continuous use to about 150°C (302 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between 2A80-T6 and 2A80-O?
T6 is the default condition — specify solution heat treated and artificially aged material for pistons, impellers and hot-running forgings needing the best strength/heat resistance mix (380 MPa yield, 200 °C); elongation drops to 8%. O: pick the annealed intermediate state for forging and machining when maximum plasticity (18% elongation, 60 HB) is needed for secondary forming before solution treatment and ageing. Yield strength is 380 MPa in T6 versus 90 MPa in O.
