What is CRNGO?

CRNGO is cold-rolled non-grain-oriented electrical steel: a low-carbon Fe-Si(-Al) soft magnetic sheet, typically 0.35–0.65 mm thick with 0.5–3.5 % Si, supplied in coil or blanked laminations with an insulating coating. It is chosen for rotating machines (motors, generators, small transformers, ballasts) because its magnetic properties are nearly isotropic in the sheet plane and its added Si/Al raises resistivity to suppress eddy-current loss. Limits are modest mechanical strength, brittleness and poor formability at high Si, reduced saturation induction versus pure iron, essentially no corrosion resistance without the coating, and magnetic degradation from punching stresses, welding or overheating (Curie point ≈ 740 °C). CRNGO has a density of 7.65 g/cm³ (0.276 lb/in³), lighter than 97% of steel grades. It melts at 1,500°C (2,732 °F). CRNGO has a yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) — weaker than 78% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 25% and the elastic modulus is 200 GPa (29 Msi).

Working with CRNGO

Is CRNGO easy to machine?

Rarely machined; thin high-Si sheet is abrasive and burr-prone — use carbide, sharp tooling, and prefer punching, laser or EDM over milling.

Can CRNGO be welded?

TIG/laser welding of lamination stacks is possible but shorts laminations and raises local core loss; keep welds short and outside the flux path.

Can CRNGO be formed, bent or molded?

Optimised for high-speed progressive-die blanking with tight punch-die clearance (~5 % of thickness) and sharp tools; bending/drawing is limited at ≥2.5 % Si.

Supplied with C-3/C-5 insulating coating — do not anodize; avoid grinding or pickling the coating, and stress-relief anneal (750–820 °C, neutral/H₂-N₂) after cutting if loss matters.

Surface treatments FabDigit runs on steel parts — pick them in the quote configurator or call them out on the drawing. Each links to its datasheet in the surface-finish library (thickness, specs, call-out, material verdicts).

CRNGO — frequently asked

What is CRNGO used for?

CRNGO is typically used for motor stator and rotor laminations, generator cores, small transformer cores, reactor and ballast cores, traction motor lamination stacks and solenoid and relay cores. In short: cold-rolled non-oriented coil.

What is the yield strength of CRNGO?

CRNGO has a typical yield strength of 330 MPa (47.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 470 MPa (68.2 ksi) — weaker than 78% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 3 listed tempers.

Is CRNGO easy to machine?

Reasonably — machinability is rated fair (45/100, worse than 65% of steel grades). Rarely machined; thin high-Si sheet is abrasive and burr-prone — use carbide, sharp tooling, and prefer punching, laser or EDM over milling.

Can CRNGO be welded?

With care — weldability is rated fair (50/100). TIG/laser welding of lamination stacks is possible but shorts laminations and raises local core loss; keep welds short and outside the flux path.

What surface finishes work on CRNGO?

Supplied with C-3/C-5 insulating coating — do not anodize; avoid grinding or pickling the coating, and stress-relief anneal (750–820 °C, neutral/H₂-N₂) after cutting if loss matters.

Can CRNGO be formed, bent or molded?

Optimised for high-speed progressive-die blanking with tight punch-die clearance (~5 % of thickness) and sharp tools; bending/drawing is limited at ≥2.5 % Si.

What is the maximum service temperature of CRNGO?

CRNGO is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.

What is the difference between CRNGO Annealed and CRNGO-SRA?

Annealed is the default condition — standard stocked condition: magnetic properties are final at the mill, laminations are punched and stacked with no further heat treatment. SRA: use for punched/laser-cut cores where edge work-hardening has raised core loss; recovers most magnetic performance at slightly lower strength. Yield strength is 330 MPa in Annealed versus 300 MPa in SRA.
