What is 30P105?

30P105 is a grain-oriented Fe-3%Si electrical steel supplied to JIS C2553, with a Goss texture aligned to the rolling direction and a mill-applied C-5 insulating coating. It is specified for transformer and reactor cores where low core loss along the flux path outweighs mechanical properties, and ships as fully processed coil, slit strip and stress-relief-annealed laminations. Properties are strongly directional: tensile strength is 350 MPa, elongation about 8 %, formability low, and service is limited to about 200 °C. EN 10107 grades such as M140-30P are the nearest equivalents. 30P105 has a density of 7.65 g/cm³ (0.276 lb/in³), lighter than 97% of steel grades. It melts at 1,480°C (2,696 °F). 30P105 has a yield strength of 315 MPa (45.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 350 MPa (50.8 ksi) — weaker than 82% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 8% and the elastic modulus is 120 GPa (17.4 Msi).

Limitations

  • Low stiffness — 120 GPa (17.4 Msi), worse than 99% of steel grades

Working with 30P105

Is 30P105 easy to machine?

Normally slit, punched or mitre-sheared rather than machined; use sharp carbide tooling and tight clearance (≈5 % of thickness) to keep burrs under ~20 µm, as burrs short-circuit laminations and raise loss.

Can 30P105 be welded?

Fusion welding (TIG/laser) is possible for core clamping or strip joining but destroys the Goss texture and coating in the heat-affected zone, so keep welds off the flux path.

Can 30P105 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold formability is poor and strongly anisotropic — restrict to gentle bending along the rolling direction and core winding, then stress-relief anneal at ~800 °C in a protective atmosphere.
