What is M103-27N?

M103-27N is a high-permeability (Hi-B) grain-oriented electrical steel to EN 10107, 0.27 mm gauge, with a sharply aligned Goss texture and an inorganic phosphate (C-5) coating; double-coated and uncoated conditions are also available. It is selected where transformer core loss and exciting power must be minimised, and is supplied as fully processed slit strip for stacked or wound cores. Yield strength is 320 MPa, tensile 360 MPa and elongation about 10 %, so formability is limited and directional, with service capped near 200 °C. Cost per tonne is well above conventional grades such as M140-30P. M103-27N has a density of 7.65 g/cm³ (0.276 lb/in³), lighter than 97% of steel grades. It melts at 1,490°C (2,714 °F). M103-27N has a yield strength of 320 MPa (46.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 360 MPa (52.2 ksi) — weaker than 81% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 10% and the elastic modulus is 120 GPa (17.4 Msi).

Working with M103-27N

Is M103-27N easy to machine?

Do not machine conventionally — slit, shear, punch or laser/EDM cut with sharp, carbide or coated tooling; keep burr <10 µm and expect abrasive wear from the ceramic/phosphate coating.

Can M103-27N be welded?

Resistance or laser welding of coil joints only; any weld or heat-affected zone locally destroys the Goss texture and raises core loss, so avoid welds in the flux path.

Can M103-27N be formed, bent or molded?

Formability is limited and highly directional — use for flat stacked or wound cores with generous bend radii; all cutting introduces stress that should be removed by an 800 °C stress-relief anneal.
