What is 30CrMnTi?

30CrMnTi is a chromium-manganese-titanium alloy gear steel, a higher-carbon variant of 20CrMnTi in which titanium restricts grain growth during carburising while the added carbon raises core strength. It is used mainly for heavy-duty transmission gears and is supplied as bar and forging stock in annealed, normalised, cold-drawn, quenched-and-tempered, carburised and induction-hardened conditions. Default-condition values are 480 MPa yield, 780 MPa tensile strength, 18% elongation and 207 HB, with service to 400 °C. Weldability is poor (32/100) and the steel has no inherent corrosion resistance; 20CrMnTi is the nearest alternative for lighter gear sets. 30CrMnTi has a density of 7.82 g/cm³ (0.283 lb/in³), lighter than 82% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 30CrMnTi has a yield strength of 480 MPa (69.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 780 MPa (113 ksi) — stronger than 59% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 18% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 30CrMnTi

Is 30CrMnTi easy to machine?

Machine in the annealed (≤229 HB) or 28–32 HRC condition with sharp carbide tooling and rigid setups; leave 0.2–0.4 mm grinding stock for post-hardening finishing of gear teeth and journals.

Can 30CrMnTi be welded?

Poor weldability (CE ≈ 0.7–0.8) — preheat 250–350 °C, use low-hydrogen consumables and temper immediately after welding; avoid welding carburised or hardened parts.

Can 30CrMnTi be formed, bent or molded?

Hot forge 1150–1200 °C finishing above 850 °C followed by slow cool and annealing; cold forming limited to mild bending in the annealed state.

What surface finishes work on 30CrMnTi?

Cannot be anodised — protect with Mn-phosphate (also good for gear run-in), black oxide, zinc plating or oil; shot peening after hardening significantly raises bending fatigue life.

Surface treatments FabDigit runs on steel parts — pick them in the quote configurator or call them out on the drawing. Each links to its datasheet in the surface-finish library (thickness, specs, call-out, material verdicts).
