What is 20MnCrMo4-2?
20MnCrMo4-2 (1.3570) is a manganese-chromium-molybdenum case-hardening steel of the EN 10084 family, alloyed for greater hardenability than 20CrMo4 in heavier sections. It is supplied as bar and forging stock in annealed, ferrite-pearlite, treated-for-machining and spheroidized conditions, machined soft at 400 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 20% elongation and 195 HB, then carburized and ground. Weldability is limited (score 40, CEV ≈0.6–0.7) and the steel has no corrosion resistance. Where core toughness matters more than alloy cost, 20NiCrMo7 is the nearest alternative. 20MnCrMo4-2 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 20MnCrMo4-2 has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — weaker than 60% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 20MnCrMo4-2
Is 20MnCrMo4-2 easy to machine?
Machine fully in the soft (+A/+FP/+TH) condition with coated carbide at ~120–180 m/min; leave 0.1–0.3 mm grinding stock on gear/bearing surfaces, since after carburizing only grinding or hard turning with CBN is practical.
Can 20MnCrMo4-2 be welded?
Weldable only with care — CEV ≈ 0.6–0.7 means 200–300 °C preheat, low-hydrogen consumables and prompt stress relief; never weld carburized surfaces.
Can 20MnCrMo4-2 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold heading and extrusion are done in the +AC (spheroidized) or +S condition; hot forging 1100–1150 °C with slow cooling or immediate isothermal anneal to avoid bainite in heavy sections.
