What is 17CrS3?

17CrS3 (1.7014) is a resulfurized free-machining version of the 17Cr3 case-hardening chromium steel from the EN carburizing family. The manganese sulfide additions raise the machinability score to 62, so it is chosen for high-volume turned parts — small gears, pins and case-hardened fasteners — that need heavy metal removal before carburizing. Default-condition properties are about 490 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 10 % elongation and 190 HB (92 HRB), with service to 250 °C. Sulfur reduces transverse ductility, formability (score 35) and weldability (score 30); use 17Cr3 where welding or cold heading matter. 17CrS3 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 17CrS3 has a yield strength of 490 MPa (71.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — stronger than 61% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 10% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 17CrS3

Is 17CrS3 easy to machine?

Excellent for automatics — MnS breaks chips and lubricates the cutting edge; run ~20–30 % faster than 17Cr3, carbide inserts with light positive geometry, keep coolant flow to flush fine chips.

Can 17CrS3 be welded?

Avoid structural welding: sulfur promotes hot cracking; if unavoidable, preheat 150–250 °C, use low-hydrogen consumables and post-weld stress relieve, and never weld carburized surfaces.

Can 17CrS3 be formed, bent or molded?

Cold heading and cold extrusion only in the +AC condition and with reduced severity — sulfide stringers cut transverse ductility; hot forge 1100–850 °C then normalize/anneal before machining.

What surface finishes work on 17CrS3?

Not anodizable; protect with zinc or zinc-nickel plating, phosphating, black oxide or oil. Case-hardened surfaces polish and hard-grind well, but MnS pits limit mirror finishes.
