What is 16MnCrB5?

16MnCrB5 (1.7160) is a boron-treated low-alloy case-hardening steel from the EN 10084 family, in which micro-alloyed boron raises hardenability so manganese and chromium content can be reduced relative to 16MnCr5. It is supplied as bar, wire and forging stock in +FP, +H, +AC and +AC+C conditions, with core properties near 400 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 20 % elongation and 175 HB (88 HRB), and is carburised to give a hard case on a tough core. Corrosion resistance is negligible and service is limited to about 400 °C; where guaranteed hardenability bands are required, plain 16MnCr5 is the usual substitute. 16MnCrB5 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). 16MnCrB5 has a yield strength of 400 MPa (58 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — weaker than 60% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 20% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 16MnCrB5

Is 16MnCrB5 easy to machine?

Machine in +FP or +AC+C condition with coated carbide (Vc ≈ 150–220 m/min); gummy in fully spheroidized bar — use positive geometry and sharp edges, finish-grind after carburising.

Can 16MnCrB5 be welded?

Weldable in the soft condition with low-hydrogen consumables and 150–250 °C preheat; avoid welding carburised or hardened zones, and post-weld temper to limit martensite cracking.

Can 16MnCrB5 be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent cold heading and cold extrusion in +AC (phosphate + soap lubrication); hot forge at 1100–850 °C then normalise at 880–920 °C to restore uniform grain.

What surface finishes work on 16MnCrB5?

Not anodisable — carburise 900–930 °C, oil quench, temper 150–200 °C, then shot peen for fatigue and protect with black oxide, phosphate or zinc/Zn-Ni plating (bake to avoid hydrogen embrittlement).
