What is 23MnB3?
23MnB3 (1.5507) is a manganese-boron cold-heading steel in the EN 10083/10250 alloy steel family, combining about 0.23 % C with manganese and boron for high hardenability at low alloy cost. It is used for quenched-and-tempered fasteners and structural bolts and is supplied as annealed, spheroidized or cold-drawn coil, wire and bar (+A, +AC, +C, +N, +QT). In the default quenched-and-tempered condition it gives about 920 MPa yield, 1050 MPa tensile, 13 % elongation and 320 HB (34 HRC), with a maximum service temperature of 350 °C. Weldability is limited (CE ≈ 0.45–0.55) and the steel has no corrosion resistance; for lower strength with easier welding and forming use 23B2. 23MnB3 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 23MnB3 has a yield strength of 920 MPa (133 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,050 MPa (152 ksi) — stronger than 90% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 13% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 23MnB3
Is 23MnB3 easy to machine?
Machine in +AC or +A condition (≈45–65 % of AISI 1212); in +QT above 32 HRC use coated carbide, rigid setups and reduced feed — the steel is gummy and free-machining additives are absent.
Can 23MnB3 be welded?
Weldable with care (CE ≈ 0.45–0.55): preheat 150–250 °C, low-hydrogen consumables and slow cooling; avoid welding fully hardened fasteners as the HAZ softens and can crack.
Can 23MnB3 be formed, bent or molded?
Designed for multi-station cold heading and cold extrusion in the spheroidized (+AC) phosphate/soap-coated condition; hot forge 1100–1200 °C, then normalize or directly quench and temper.
