What is 8627?
8627 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum carburizing steel (UNS G86270) with carbon between 8625 and 8630, giving good hardenability for medium-section case-hardened parts that also need higher core strength. It is available hot-rolled, annealed, normalized, cold-drawn, carburized, and quenched and tempered over a 205–650 °C tempering range; the annealed condition is about 380 MPa yield, 560 MPa tensile, 30 % elongation and 156 HB (82 HRB). The ~0.27 % C level lowers weldability (score 52) and formability compared with 8617, and machinability sits near 60 % of 1212; 8620 is the alternative where easier welding or forming governs. 8627 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 8627 has a yield strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) — weaker than 68% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 30% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi).

Working with 8627
Is 8627 easy to machine?
Machines well annealed or normalized (~60–65 % of 1212) with carbide tooling; rough machine before carburizing and finish-grind the hardened case.
Can 8627 be welded?
Weldable with low-hydrogen consumables but the ~0.27 % C and Ni-Cr-Mo content require 200–300 °C preheat and post-weld stress relief/temper; do not weld after carburizing.
Can 8627 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge 1100–1200 °C with slow cooling or normalizing afterwards; cold forming limited to mild bending in the annealed condition.
