What is 17CrNi6-6?
17CrNi6-6 (1.5918, comparable to AISI 9310) is a chromium-nickel case-hardening steel in the EN 10084 family, carburized to give a hard wear-resistant case over a tough, fatigue-resistant low-carbon core. It is chosen for heavily loaded automotive and aerospace gears and is supplied as bar, forging stock and tube in +S, +FP, +N, +AC, +AC+C, +H and CH conditions; core properties are about 375 MPa yield, 620 MPa tensile, 18 % elongation and 180 HB, with service to 350 °C. Weldability is restricted (score 42) and the nickel makes the soft state gummy (machinability 52), so machine before carburizing and grind afterwards. 17CrNi6-6 has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,425°C (2,597 °F). 17CrNi6-6 has a yield strength of 375 MPa (54.4 ksi) and a tensile strength of 620 MPa (89.9 ksi) — weaker than 70% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 18% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi).

Working with 17CrNi6-6
Is 17CrNi6-6 easy to machine?
Machine in +FP or +AC before carburizing; coated carbide, moderate speeds and rigid setups — nickel content makes it gummy in the fully soft state, so finish-grind after hardening.
Can 17CrNi6-6 be welded?
Weldable only with care: preheat 200–300 °C, low-hydrogen consumables and immediate stress relief; never weld carburized surfaces.
Can 17CrNi6-6 be formed, bent or molded?
Hot forge 1100–850 °C followed by normalizing; cold heading and drawing are practical only in the spheroidized (+AC) condition.
