What is Pb65Sn35?
Pb65Sn35 is a lead-heavy tin-lead soft solder with a broad 183–247 °C pasty range, giving slow solidification for wiped and filled joints. It is chosen for cable jointing and hand-formed seams where the filler must be paddled or wiped into place, and is supplied as bar, solid and cored wire, foil and paste. Mechanical values are low — 32 MPa tensile, 20 MPa yield, 55 % elongation, 12 HB — with a machinability score of 30 and creep under sustained load. Lead content excludes potable-water and RoHS work; Pb60Sn40 or Pb50Sn50 give better wetting and a narrower freezing range. Pb65Sn35 has a density of 9.5 g/cm³ (0.343 lb/in³), heavier than 65% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. It melts at 183°C (361 °F). Pb65Sn35 has a yield strength of 21 MPa (3.05 ksi) and a tensile strength of 33 MPa (4.79 ksi) — weaker than 72% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. Elongation at break is 55% and the elastic modulus is 26 GPa (3.77 Msi).

Working with Pb65Sn35
Is Pb65Sn35 easy to machine?
Extremely soft and gummy — use sharp high-rake tools, low speed, generous lubricant; cutting is rarely needed since the alloy is shear-cut or cast to size.
Can Pb65Sn35 be welded?
Not fusion welded; joints are made by soldering the alloy itself — work in the 183–247 °C pasty range and avoid disturbing the joint before full solidification.
Can Pb65Sn35 be formed, bent or molded?
Readily cast, extruded, rolled and hand-wiped/paddle-shaped while pasty; recrystallises at room temperature so it never work-hardens permanently.
