What is SN100C?

SN100C is a patented lead-free Sn-Cu-Ni-Ge solder, with nickel and germanium micro-additions that reduce copper dissolution from pads and suppress dross formation in wave pots. It is chosen for high-volume wave and selective soldering and for automotive electronics, and is supplied as bar, solid and cored wire, paste, preforms and spheres. Joint strength is the lowest in this group — 20 MPa yield, 32 MPa tensile, 40% elongation, 15 HB — with a 125 °C service limit, so SAC305 is the alternative where higher joint strength or established paste chemistry is required. SN100C has a density of 7.4 g/cm³ (0.267 lb/in³), lighter than 67% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. It melts at 227°C (441 °F). SN100C has a yield strength of 20 MPa (2.9 ksi) and a tensile strength of 32 MPa (4.64 ksi) — weaker than 74% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. Elongation at break is 40% and the elastic modulus is 45 GPa (6.53 Msi).

Working with SN100C

Is SN100C easy to machine?

Too soft and gummy for conventional machining; shapes are cast, extruded or stamped rather than cut.

Can SN100C be welded?

Not fusion welded — it is the joining filler itself; wave/selective pots run at 255–275 °C and reflow peaks at 240–250 °C.

Can SN100C be formed, bent or molded?

Excellent hot/cold workability: readily extruded to wire, rolled to ribbon, atomised to Type 3–5 powder and stamped into preforms.
