What is Chemical Lead?

Chemical Lead (UNS L51120, ASTM B29) is lead with a small controlled copper addition of about 0.04–0.08% that improves resistance to sulfuric acid corrosion. It is supplied as rolled sheet, extruded pipe, drawn wire, castings and ingot for acid tank linings, process pipework and cable sheathing, with 17 MPa tensile, 6 MPa yield, 50% elongation, 4.5 HB, machinability 55 and formability 95. Service is limited to about 100 °C and the metal creeps under sustained load, so linings must be fully supported. Where creep and fatigue resistance matter more, Tellurium Lead (L51121) is the nearest alternative. Chemical Lead has a density of 11.34 g/cm³ (0.41 lb/in³), heavier than 99% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. It melts at 327°C (621 °F). Chemical Lead has a yield strength of 6 MPa (0.87 ksi) and a tensile strength of 17 MPa (2.47 ksi) — weaker than 96% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. Elongation at break is 50% and the elastic modulus is 14 GPa (2.03 Msi).

Working with Chemical Lead

Is Chemical Lead easy to machine?

Cuts with almost no force but smears badly — use very sharp high-rake tools, high speed, light feeds and paraffin/soluble-oil lubrication; capture chips and dust for lead hygiene control.

Can Chemical Lead be welded?

Joined by lead burning (oxy-hydrogen/oxy-acetylene or TIG) with matching chemical-lead filler and no flux; requires forced ventilation and fume extraction.

Can Chemical Lead be formed, bent or molded?

Extremely formable cold — bossing, hammering, spinning and deep bending are routine, and the metal self-anneals at room temperature so intermediate annealing is never needed.
