What is Pb98Ag2?

Pb98Ag2 is a tin-free lead-silver solder from the high-lead end of the Sn-Pb solder family, where the 2% silver raises the remelt point and limits silver leaching from plated parts. It is chosen for the first, hottest step in step-soldering sequences and for die attach in power devices, and is stocked as wire, flux-cored wire, bar, foil, preform, powder and paste. Strength is low — 26 MPa tensile, 14 MPa yield, 35% elongation, 8 HB — and service is capped near 200 °C, so joints should not be load-bearing. Lead content restricts it to RoHS-exempt work; Pb95Ag5 is the nearest alternative. Pb98Ag2 has a density of 11.28 g/cm³ (0.408 lb/in³), heavier than 94% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. It melts at 304°C (579 °F). Pb98Ag2 has a yield strength of 14 MPa (2.03 ksi) and a tensile strength of 26 MPa (3.77 ksi) — weaker than 85% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. Elongation at break is 35% and the elastic modulus is 16.5 GPa (2.39 Msi).

Working with Pb98Ag2

Is Pb98Ag2 easy to machine?

Rarely machined; if trimmed, use sharp high-rake tools, flood lubricant and expect smearing — lead swarf must be handled under lead-hygiene controls.

Can Pb98Ag2 be welded?

Not fusion welded; joined only by soldering — use an active (RA/inorganic) flux and 350–400 °C iron or reflow profile, and preheat heavy copper parts.

Can Pb98Ag2 be formed, bent or molded?

Extremely ductile: extrudes to wire, rolls to foil and stamps into preforms cold without annealing, but recrystallizes at room temperature so cold work does not persist.
