What is Pb95Sn5?
Pb95Sn5 is a near-pure-lead solder (ASTM B32 Sn5) with a small tin addition, used where a high remelt temperature of about 310 °C is required. It suits high-temperature step soldering, seam sealing and die-attach preforms, and is supplied cast, extruded, as cored wire, paste and in the as-soldered condition. Strength is low at 24 MPa tensile and 13 MPa yield with 45 % elongation and 9.5 HB, but the 150 °C service limit is the highest in this Sn-Pb group. Minimal tin gives sluggish wetting that needs active flux and preheat; Pb98Sn2 raises the solidus further at the cost of even weaker joints. Pb95Sn5 has a density of 11.03 g/cm³ (0.398 lb/in³), heavier than 91% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. It melts at 308°C (586 °F). Pb95Sn5 has a yield strength of 13 MPa (1.89 ksi) and a tensile strength of 24 MPa (3.48 ksi) — weaker than 87% of solder & low-melting alloy grades. Elongation at break is 45% and the elastic modulus is 18 GPa (2.61 Msi).

Working with Pb95Sn5
Is Pb95Sn5 easy to machine?
Practically unmachinable — extremely soft and gummy; it smears and loads tooling, so parts are cast, extruded or stamped instead.
Can Pb95Sn5 be welded?
Not fusion-welded; joints are made by soldering, and remelt temperature (~310 °C) is the whole point of the alloy for step-soldering.
Can Pb95Sn5 be formed, bent or molded?
Extrudes and rolls easily at room temperature into wire, ribbon and preforms with no annealing needed (lead recrystallises at RT).
