What is C72650?

C72650 (Toughmet 2) is a spinodally hardened copper-nickel-tin alloy in the C70000–C79999 family that reaches 745 MPa yield, 795 MPa tensile and 29 HRC without beryllium. It is chosen for connectors, bearings and springs that need strength with 12% IACS conductivity, 50 W/m·K thermal conductivity and good wear and corrosion resistance; bar, rod and strip are available in solution-treated TB00 through aged CX105 and TS110 tempers. Formability is limited (score 30) once aged, service is capped near 250 °C, and fusion welding destroys the temper. Beryllium copper is the nearest alternative where restricted-material rules allow it. C72650 has a density of 8.85 g/cm³ (0.32 lb/in³), heavier than 66% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,030°C (1,886 °F). C72650 has a yield strength of 745 MPa (108 ksi) and a tensile strength of 795 MPa (115 ksi) — stronger than 97% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 8% and the elastic modulus is 135 GPa (19.6 Msi).

Working with C72650

Is C72650 easy to machine?

Machines very well in hardened tempers with fine, non-gummy chips — use sharp carbide, positive rake, high speed and flood coolant; no lead needed for chip breaking.

Can C72650 be welded?

Fusion welding is not recommended for load-bearing joints since heat destroys the spinodal temper; if required use low-heat GTAW with Cu-Ni filler and expect local softening.

Can C72650 be formed, bent or molded?

Form, coin or bend in TB00/soft temper and then spinodally age; hardened CX/TS tempers tolerate only gentle large-radius bending.
