What is C74400?
C74400 is a low-nickel copper-nickel-zinc (nickel silver) wrought alloy supplied as strip and sheet from OS050, OS035 and OS015 annealed conditions through H01–H10 rolled tempers. It gives a bright silvery appearance at lower cost than 65-10 nickel silver and reaches 515 MPa tensile strength, 440 MPa yield and 75 HRB with 12% elongation, suiting stampings and decorative hardware. Formability rating is 70, service is limited to 200 °C, arc welding is difficult because zinc volatilises, and cold-worked parts need stress relief against ammonia SCC. C74500 is the alternative when a whiter colour is required. C74400 has a density of 8.7 g/cm³ (0.314 lb/in³), lighter than 56% of copper alloy grades. It melts at 1,020°C (1,868 °F). C74400 has a yield strength of 440 MPa (63.8 ksi) and a tensile strength of 515 MPa (74.7 ksi) — stronger than 85% of copper alloy grades. Elongation at break is 12% and the elastic modulus is 124 GPa (18 Msi).

Working with C74400
Is C74400 easy to machine?
Rating ~20 % of free-cutting brass — gummy, long chips; use sharp positive-rake tools, moderate speed and generous coolant, or specify a leaded nickel silver if heavy machining is needed.
Can C74400 be welded?
Best joined by silver brazing or soft soldering; resistance and GTAW welding are possible with care but zinc fuming and hot cracking must be controlled — no cast-alloy fusion practice.
Can C74400 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent cold formability in annealed tempers (deep draw, roll form, coin); interstage anneal at 600–750 °C and stress-relieve cold-worked parts near 260 °C to avoid ammonia-induced SCC.
C74400 chemical composition (wt %)
Limits by weight percent from the governing specification, written the way the spec states them — a single maximum for impurities, a range for alloying elements, and the base element as balance. Nominal is the typical mid-range value.
