Working with 5449-H26
Is 5449 easy to machine?
Machines like other soft 5000-series sheet — use sharp polished high-rake carbide tools, high speed and flood lubrication to prevent built-up edge and burring.
Can 5449 be welded?
Readily GMAW/GTAW, resistance spot and laser welded with 5356 or 5183 filler; HAZ softens to near-O strength in H2x tempers.
Can 5449 be formed, bent or molded?
Excellent deep drawing, stretch forming and hemming in O/H111; the high n-value gives good strain distribution, but temper-roll or pre-strain to suppress Lüders bands and allow bake response.
What surface finishes work on 5449?
Takes clear and colour anodize well, and is a good substrate for conversion coating, e-coat and automotive paint systems; mechanical polish before anodizing for bright finishes.
