Working with 1080A-H16
Is 1080A easy to machine?
Very gummy — use polished high-rake carbide, high speed, sharp edges and generous lubricant/air blast to avoid built-up edge and smearing; harder H16/H18 tempers cut cleaner than O.
Can 1080A be welded?
Excellent with TIG/MIG using 1188 or 1100 filler; resistance and friction-stir welding also work, but the weld zone anneals back to O-temper strength.
Can 1080A be formed, bent or molded?
Outstanding cold formability — deep drawing, spinning, foil rolling and tight-radius bending in O/H1x2 tempers; expect strong work hardening and interstage annealing at 340–410 °C.
What surface finishes work on 1080A?
Bright dips and specular polishes to very high reflectivity; clear/bright anodizing gives water-clear films, and the soft substrate needs care to avoid handling scratches before coating.
